Protecting your home before painting

As a professional painter and decorator, I believe that a homeowner can never be too careful when it comes to protecting their home prior to decorating. With a little bit of preparation, you can ensure that the painting process goes smoothly, and you don't have to worry about damaging your home. Here are some useful tips that I follow to protect my clients' homes before starting any painting project.

Cover the Floors and Furniture

Paint and other decorating materials can easily damage floors and furniture, so it is essential to protect them before starting any painting job. I always recommend covering floors with floor protection such as carpet protection for carpets, ProBoard for hard flooring, and furniture with plastic sheets. It is also beneficial to remove all loose items from the room, such as rugs, cushions, and decor, to avoid any damage or staining.

Masking Tape

A masking tape is an essential tool for a professional painter and decorator. I use it to cover any areas that I do not want to paint, including trim, walls, ceilings, sockets, light switches, and light fixtures. It is best to use high-quality tape to ensure it doesn't peel off or leave any marks while removing.

Prepping the Room

Before I start painting, I ensure that the room is adequately prepped. This includes removing any light switch and outlet panels, patching any holes or cracks in the walls, cleaning the surface area, and sanding down rough patches. By doing this, the painted surface will look even and clean, and the paint will adhere better.

Protecting the Windows

When painting windows or doors, protecting the glass is crucial. I use painter's tape to protect the glass from any paint drips or splatter. The pre-folded film also works well to protect glass, and I place them on the windowsill to protect the windowsill also.

Ventilation

It's also essential to ensure proper ventilation when painting. Keeping windows and doors open can help reduce the strong smell of paint and improve the air quality in the room.

In conclusion, protecting your home is one of the most important aspects of any painting or decorating job. With proper planning and preparation, you can ensure a hassle-free painting process and keep your home free from any damage.
