Hidden defects, how to deal with them

As painting and decorating professionals, we encounter various defects that are not always visible to the naked eye. These hidden defects may include interior dampness and exterior wood rot. While these defects may seem minor initially, they can escalate into major structural problems if left unattended.

The first step in addressing these issues is to document them accurately. We take detailed photos and videos of the affected areas to show the extent of the damage. Showing the customer visual evidence provides transparency and accountability, allowing them to make informed decisions about how they want to proceed.

For interior dampness, we typically would be able to identify the root cause of the problem at the initial visit prior to providing you with an estimate. This could be a leak, condensation, or inadequate ventilation. Once the cause is identified, we work with the customer to find an appropriate solution, whether that be repairing the affected area, installing or upgrading ventilation systems, or both.

When it comes to exterior wood rot, we can often identify the issue during our initial inspection but that may not always be the case, previous decorators may have done a bodge job to find out only when doing a proper job. We advise the customer of the extent of the damage and what action needs to be taken during decorating. This could involve replacing the affected wood completely or carrying out repairs.

Ultimately, the choice of how to proceed with hidden defects is up to the customer including potential costs. We believe that full transparency and communication are key in helping customers make informed decisions that are right for them. By providing visual evidence, we can help our customers understand the nature of the problem and advise them on the best course of action. This approach allows us to work effectively with our customers, ensuring that their painting and decorating needs are met in a professional and efficient manner.
